Ottawa, December 2024 –
Artists and scientists working together find better solutions sooner.
While creating the series INFERNO, it has been a pleasure consulting with scientists working in Canada and abroad. It was a treat to meet with Italian researcher Veronica L. M. Coppolaro at de Montigny Contemporary, when she was in Ottawa to speak at a conference.
Veronica has been studying the impacts of climate change and vessel underwater noise on marine mammals in the Canadian Arctic using passive acoustic monitoring. She also worked for the Institute of Polar Sciences (CNR – ISP) of Venezia Mestre with the role of Station Leader of the Italian Arctic station Dirigibile Italia in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. Veronica has since taken a position at the Institute for the study of anthropic impacts and sustainability in the marine environment (IAS), National Research Council of Italy (CNR).

“Mountain Glacier” is fabricated from 30 separate pieces, each of a different height. These represent the annual retreat of world glaciers (glacier mass balance) from 1994 to 2023.
